Marlow and Green Marine Team Up 1

To support its customers in the transition from conventional to alternative fuels and to further strengthen the qualification and preparation of the crew supplied to its clients, Marlow Navigation has forged a close partnership with Green Marine, the industry leader in the methanol-as-marine fuel chain.

This decision was based on the very successful and tested cooperation over the last two years, during which the focus has been on several training initiatives, knowledge exchange and support in the area of low flash point fuels which resulted in Marlow Navigation becoming a fully accredited provider of IGF courses (STCW) in the Philippines.

Green Marine, who is best known for its pioneering role in supporting owners and managers in the implementation process of methanol as an alternative fuel, will support and assist Marlow by advising, consulting and training owners and crews for the design and lay-out, processes and procedures and safe handling not only of methanol-fuelled engines, but in the future also regarding LNG, Ethanol and Ammonia.

Green Marine’s engineering background combined with expert knowledge gained from consulting clients on the majority of new and retrofit alternative fuel projects globally, ensures Green Marine is positioned right at the forefront of new developments and innovation, constantly updating its knowledge platform.

With the assistance of Green Marine, Marlow will now be able to offer face to face and simulator training on alternative fuels in the Philippines and very soon also in Europe. Utilising the existing resources of Green Marine in the Far East, including Singapore and China, as well as through the development of blended learning courses with live online classrooms, the aim is to provide learning solutions on a global scale.

“We (Marlow) have always seen training as a vital part of our service when offering crew and technical management. The cooperation agreement between Green Marine provides Marlow Navigation with access to the expertise on alternative fuels. It further enhances our ability to provide customised solutions to our customers whilst strengthening the qualification of our crews,” states General Manager, Marlow Navigation, Joern Clodius.

Clodius goes on to stress that it is of utmost importance to prepare crews for the changes ahead: “We don’t know yet what finally will be the chosen fuel of the future. Much will depend on the availability of the specific alternative fuel and the expected trading area of the vessel. For that reason, we must be able to provide solutions for the different options with their own characteristics and dedicated training needs,” continues Clodius. “The one size fits all approach, which in some areas may have been an option in the past has definitely run its course and crews today, more than ever before, need to be specifically trained for the vessels, engines and fuels they are in charge of.”
“At Green Marine, our mission has always been to bridge the knowledge gap between today’s conventional operations and tomorrow’s clean-fuel reality,” adds CEO of Green Marine, Fredrik Stubner. “This partnership with Marlow allows us to expand our global network of maritime professionals and apply more than a decade of direct experience in methanol and other low-flashpoint fuels to a new generation of seafarers. By embedding best practice from real-world projects into high-impact training, we can accelerate safe adoption, strengthen operational readiness, and contribute tangibly to the decarbonisation of shipping.”

The new office in Chennai will strengthen Marlow’s global service portfolio, supporting the group’s growing needs for all maritime related services, while also bolstering its commitment to innovation through its suite of advanced digital solutions for the industry.

Working in close collaboration with core teams at group headquarters in Cyprus, the Chennai office will help strengthen engagement across maritime activities, including recruitment, planning, and seafarer support.

Additionally, the new office will serve as a key hub for accelerating Marlow’s software development initiatives. By tapping into Chennai’s rich talent pool and technology ecosystem, the company plans to drive forward its bespoke digital solutions for the maritime sector. This includes enhancing tailor-made crew recruitment and management software, as well as expanding digital portals and applications designed for both seafarers and clients.

“The pace of change and new possibilities across the digital landscape are tremendous and already benefiting our operations,” said Marlow Navigation’s Joint Managing Director, Jan Meyering, during the inauguration. “Recognising this potential, we embarked on a major transformation, redesigning our tailor-made management software and introducing new digital tools. The new Chennai team will complement these efforts.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent industry figures, including Dr J Ramachandran, Founder and Chancellor of AMET University; Captain Thyagrajan, General Manager of India’s State-owned Shipping Company Poompuhar Shipping; and Captain Sivaraman Krishnamurthi, Founder and CEO of TrimSail Digital Solutions.

Underwater Vessel Inspections: A New Perspective https://marlow-offshore.com/underwater-vessel-inspections-a-new-perspective/ https://marlow-offshore.com/underwater-vessel-inspections-a-new-perspective/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2025 10:05:18 +0000 https://marlow-offshore.com/?p=4312 ROVs in technical management; Offering numerous advantages with ship inspections and maintenance, including enhancing safety precautions, cost efficiency, and improved accuracy.

The Marlow Group is leveraging Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to inspect underwater hulls and propellers of fully managed vessels. This technology offers significant advantages, including enhanced safety, cost efficiency and improved accuracy.

While remotely operated technology isn’t new, it continues to evolve, becoming more accessible and usable in the maritime industry. “This is just one example of how effective use of technology can modernise our approach to ship maintenance” explains Technical Director, Marlow Navigation, Demetris Makaritis.

A game-changer for underwater assessments, ROVs allow for quick inspections of hard-to-reach or hazardous areas of a vessel – tasks traditionally performed by specialised diving teams. Within minutes an ROV can be unpacked from a suitcase and safely deployed to check critical areas for foreign objects such as ropes and fishing nets which may have been caught in the propeller. The high-resolution and real-time data can also reveal any corroded elements, marine growth, barnacles and other debris, without the need of a dedicated diving team. In addition, it is also possible to assess potential damage after an incident or verify the condition of anti-fouling systems at a moment’s notice, reducing downtime and speeding up the repair process, all the while reducing human exposure.

Back in December 2024, the technical team at Marlow Navigation were concerned that the anti-fouling paint on one of the managed container vessels was underperforming according to data received by the control room, located at the company’s headquarters. Upon anchoring at Balboa in Panama, ROV technology was successfully employed for an unplanned underwater inspection. The real-time footage relayed to shore teams revealed significant marine growth on the port and starboard sides around the middle section of the hull, while the bottom and aft parts of the vessel remained clean. Subsequently an underwater hull cleaning was performed prior to the ship’s next voyage to maintain optimal efficiency until the next scheduled drydock.

Regular use of ROVs can help boost the efficiency and performance of a vessel. Hull surface roughness increases hydrodynamic drag, notably impacting speed and fuel consumption. Similarly, a poorly maintained propeller can have similar effects. Regular monitoring of the anti-fouling system ensures that necessary measures are taken to maintain optimal performance. These can improve fuel efficiency by up to 10%. Considering that bunker costs typically account for most of the voyage expenses of a vessel – significant savings throughout vessel operations can be achieved. Furthermore, ROVs also allow to better plan proactive maintenance. Adopting a pre-emptive approach can further reduce costs considerably compared to reactive strategies.

“In technical ship management, efficiency and cost-effectiveness are paramount,” Makaritis emphasises. “The use of ROVs is just one of many methods and technologies we employ at Marlow to assess vessel conditions. Regular underwater inspections ensure our vessels operate at peak efficiency, contributing to cost savings and environmental sustainability, without affecting a vessel’s schedule, unlike to the use of diving teams.”

As the maritime industry continues to embrace innovative technologies like ROVs, the benefits extend beyond operational efficiency and cost savings. By prioritising safety, environmental sustainability, and proactive maintenance, all contribute to setting a new standard for responsible and forward-thinking ship management. The future of maritime operations is not just about navigating the seas but doing so responsibly.

New Single Sign-On Method

One of the standout features of this update is the integration of a new Marlow Single Sign-On (SSO) method. This addition simplifies the login process, allowing users to access the app and web version with a single set of credentials. After updating the App to the latest version, current passwords will no longer work. Users have the choice to use Single Sign-On (SSO) if their Marlow-registered email corresponds with a social media account, or they can reset their passwords using the ‘forgot password’ option.

Introducing CrewCompanion on the Web

In affording Marlow seafarers more flexibility, the software team has launched a web version of its popular app. This new platform offers all the functionalities of the mobile app, now accessible from any web browser. The web version is designed to provide a consistent and intuitive user experience, ensuring that all features are just a click away!

Further improvements

Updates also focus on improving crew interaction with their crew manager. The new editing capabilities are set to extend into other aspects of daily administration tasks in the future.

These updates mark a significant milestone for CrewCompanion and crew registered with Marlow Offshore, offering enhanced security, convenience, and accessibility beginning July 31st, 2024. A growing and expanding industry which creates more demands for skills workers. You might, however, find yourself wondering “How to apply for offshore jobs?”.

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding career in the maritime industry, you might want to consider applying for offshore jobs. Such jobs can offer you the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world, work with cutting-edge technology, and earn a much more competitive salary. Though, oftentimes offshore opportunities also come with some requirements and responsibilities that you should be aware of. In this blog post, we will share with you some tips on how to apply for offshore marine jobs and increase your chances of getting hired.

Tip #1: Know The Requirements

Before you start applying for offshore jobs, you need to know what the requirements are for the specific position you are interested in. Different offshore jobs have different requirements, depending on the type of vessel, the nature of the work, and the level of responsibility. For example, if you want to work as an offshore engineer, you need to have a degree in engineering, preferably in a relevant field such as marine engineering, naval architecture, or mechanical engineering. You also need to have some experience in working on offshore projects, such as oil and gas exploration, renewable energy, or subsea construction. Additionally, you need to have certain certifications and licenses, such as STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping), BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), and HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training).

Tip #2: Highlight Your Skills

Another important aspect of how to apply for offshore jobs is highlighting your skills that are relevant to the position. Offshore marine jobs require a lot of technical skills, such as operating and maintaining equipment, performing inspections and repairs, and troubleshooting problems. You need to demonstrate that you have these skills by providing examples of your previous projects, achievements, and responsibilities. You also need to showcase your soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Offshore jobs involve working in a dynamic and demanding environment, where you need to collaborate with other crew members, follow instructions from superiors, and cope with stress and emergencies. Show that you have these skills by describing how you handled different situations, challenges, and conflicts in your previous roles.

Tip #3: Tailor Your Resume

One of the most common mistakes that applicants make when applying for offshore jobs is sending a generic resume that does not match the specific position they are applying for. A generic resume will not catch the attention of the recruiters or hiring managers, who are looking for candidates who have the exact qualifications, skills, and experience they need. Therefore, you need to tailor your resume to each offshore job you apply for. You need to customize your resume according to the job description, using keywords and phrases that match the requirements and expectations of the employer. You also need to highlight your most relevant achievements and accomplishments that demonstrate your value and potential as an offshore marine worker. Furthermore, you need to format your resume in a clear and professional way, using bullet points, headings, and fonts that are easy to read and scan.

Tip #4: Prepare For The Interview

The final step of applying for offshore jobs is preparing for the interview. The interview is your chance to impress the recruiters or hiring managers with your personality, attitude, and enthusiasm. You need to prepare for the interview by researching the company, the industry, and the specific position you are applying for. You need to know what the company does, what its values and goals are, what its challenges and opportunities are, and how you can contribute to its success. You also need to know what the industry trends are, what the current issues and developments are, and how they affect your role as an offshore marine worker. Moreover, you need to know what the specific position entails, what the responsibilities and expectations are, what the challenges and risks are, and how you can overcome them.

You also need to prepare for the interview by practicing your answers to common questions that are asked during offshore job interviews. Some of these questions are:

– Why do you want to work as an offshore worker?

– What are your strengths and weaknesses as an offshore worker?

– How do you cope with stress and fatigue while working offshore?

– How do you handle emergencies or accidents while working offshore?

– How do you communicate and collaborate with other crew members while working offshore?

– How do you deal with isolation and loneliness while working offshore?

– How do you balance your work and personal life while working offshore?

You need to answer these questions confidently and honestly, using examples from your previous experience or hypothetical scenarios. You also need to prepare some questions of your own that show your interest and curiosity about the company, the industry, and the position.

Bonus Tip #5: Follow Up After An Interview

The last tip on how to apply for offshore jobs is to follow up after the interview. Following up is a way of showing your appreciation, professionalism, and enthusiasm for the job. Send a thank-you email to the recruiters or hiring managers who interviewed you. Thank them for their time and consideration, restate your interest and suitability for the position, and highlight your main qualifications and skills. This is also your chance to ask them about the next steps of the hiring process, such as when you can expect to hear back from them, or if they need any additional information from you. By following up, you can keep yourself in the loop, remind them of your value and potential, and increase your chances of getting hired.

Marlow Navigation strengthens international offshore division with the launch of a dedicated website, reinforcing the Marlow Offshore brand and team.

The latest initiative gathers all offshore management activities from within the Group, establishing a competent service provider catering to the individual needs of the industry.

“Essentially, we have consolidated our various offshore departments and services under one umbrella, pulling our resources and expertise across the Marlow network to deliver turnkey solutions for the offshore industry,” stated Joint Managing Director at Marlow Navigation.

Thus far, Marlow’s offices in Germany and the Netherlands have been providing standalone services to the offshore sector. Moving forward, these now all fall under Marlow Offshore, with support from the group’s headquarters in Limassol, it’s well-established worldwide network of offices, recruitment agencies, and training centres. Collectively, creating a comprehensive and truly global service provider, with combined strengths that brings over 60 years’ experience and knowhow to the table.

As part of these efforts, a new website was recently launched, adding to the Group’s other dedicated channels. “Further to building the Marlow Offshore brand, it is essential to establish unified services specific to the industry. Our new website along with our established social media presence provide partners, prospective clients, as well as maritime, engineering and offshore specialists go-to platforms, with more direct and relevant information for their needs,” added Managing Director, Marlow Offshore, Jörn Laber.

Merger agreement signed with Opielok Offshore Carriers (OOC) https://marlow-offshore.com/marlow-ooc-unite/ Mon, 05 Jul 2021 07:51:37 +0000 https://marlow-offshore.com/?p=1139 Marlow Navigation and Opielok Offshore Carriers (OOC) sign merger agreement.

On the 28th of June 2021, OOC and the Marlow Group signed an agreement in which Marlow takes over Opielok’s shares.

Talks started in late 2020 have now reached a successful closure. The key focus and main driver behind the merging of the two brands is to retain well tested and proven qualities, whilst at the same time streamline processes and benefit from economies of scale which will result in improved customer services.

OOC, a company active in the offshore industry for over 20 years, and Marlow, providers of crew and ship-management services for almost 40 years, decided to combine their strengths. From day one, the complete OOC team, the nucleus of the new company operating out of Marlow’s Hamburg office, ensure the high standards necessary to satisfy the demands of the highly regulated offshore industry.

The company, named Marlow Offshore Germany, will continue to offer technical and crew management in the offshore and renewables market, and thus strengthen Marlow’s footprint in this sector. OOC’s know-how in combination with the Marlow Group’s world-wide network will lead to a lean offshore management company embedded in a solid global framework.

For existing and future clients, this merger translates into a personal, flexible approach to their requirements fused with the additional advantage of a large well-structured Shipmanagement company able to provide and supply any services anywhere. Marlow’s existing offshore activities paired with OOC’s expertise will result in new synergies and areas of growth.
